OVERFLOWS

São Leopoldo was born on the shore of the Sinos River and for many years overflows marked the city. Two overflows were unforgettable due to the volume of the water and the damage they caused.

In the overflow of1941 the water reached 6,25 metres above the normal level. This happened because of the work of the Highway 116 that during this time was being built.

RIBEIRO PIRES - "From the overflows I saw in the Sinos, the one of 65 was the biggest.I worked as a journalist in the radio, we worked overnight, from 9 PM to 9 AM the other day. The water came up,there was damage, pain and worries.

The water came up to the Playground- Pracinha dos Brinquedos - downtown. And a scene when I left the radio – my car, a black dolfini, was being taken from the water by a crab."

In the storming daily life by the overflow, the documents of the time show the unexpected, and why not to say, the romantic side of it.
